Pledge Some Veg!

Pledge for Veg poster

Hartlepool Allotments Team and Waverley Terrace Community Allotment are teaming up with Hartlepool Foodbank to provide vegetable boxes for Hartlepool families in crisis this Christmas.

Currently we are looking for expressions of interest from gardeners who would be willing to PLEDGE SOME VEG to the campaign.
This just means letting us know that you may have some surplus vegetables that you would be willing to donate
(the pledge is not binding – it’s just to give us an idea of how many boxes we can expect to be able to make up from the donations).

You can make a pledge in a number of ways: by telephone on 01429 523406, by emailing allotments@hartlepool.gov.uk or on our Facebook page at facebook.com/hartlepoolallotments.

We are asking gardeners for donations from the following list of items:

  • Potatoes
  • Onions
  • Garlic
  • Brussels sprouts
  • Parsnips
  • Carrots
  • Cabbage/Kale
  • Turnip/Swede
  • Winter Squash
  • Leeks

Every day people in the UK go hungry for reasons ranging from redundancy to receiving an unexpected bill on a low income.
Trussell Trust foodbanks provide a minimum of three days emergency food and support to people experiencing crisis in the UK.

In 2013-14 foodbanks fed 913,138 people nationwide. Of those helped, 330,205 were children.
Rising food and fuel prices, static incomes, underemployment and changes to benefits are some of the reasons why increasing numbers are being referred to foodbanks for emergency food.
